Travel Tuesday: Machu Picchu

Update: I just got an email in my inbox from National geographic go here to see some amazing pictures of places and people near Machu Picchu and there is going to be a story about it in the May/June 2009 issue.

If you follow the winding roads through the Urubamba valley you will be amazed at the green and blue mountains and rivers flowing in between. But continue on until it seems that you have reached the edge of Peru and you will find a small town called aguascalientes. It is at the base of a magnificent ancient city dating back to 1430- Machu Picchu. This is a trip you should not miss. Hike the Inca trail - you can do the whole thing or just the last day of it - but do it. You will hike through lush greenery, waterfalls falling down the mountainside and the most beautiful blue butterflies you will ever see. Hike Huaynu Picchu if it is not cloudy and you will see the whole valley and be able to look down on Machu Picchu. Do pretty much anything. It is historical, beautiful and cultural.

While visiting Machu Picchu tour the Cusco valley - drink from the fountain of youth and stroll the streets of Cusco.

Lima was not all that impressive - spend your time in Cusco and Machu Picchu - it is well worth your next vacation.

  2. Hi and glad to have found your blog!

Stunning photographs, they really give a feel for the scale of the place. And the colours of that butterfly are truly amazing!
