I want to visit the San Juan Islands. Don't they look beautiful? Now I just need to find a Rick Steves type guide for the Pacific Northwest - any suggestions? -c
Certainly a lovely place. We fell in love with the islands and went back 6 months later and bought land on Orcas Island. Moving there this summer. If you plan to visit Orcas Island let me know and I will send you instructions on how to get to our property. (No house yet. Have to get it built!) Has one of the best views in the islands and it's on a private road so normally you're not allowed but you can go as my guest.
Some sites you might enjoy:

(video about the ferry system and local transportation and lots more.)

(live web cams on several islands plus any blog that talks about the islands - that's how I found yours. Also has a link to sites where you can listen for and watch for whales. Be sure and read Wolf Hollow and Alex Shapiro blogs. During the season the Bitter End blog is fun. He runs a towing service for boats in distress.)

(general info from a very interesting Orcas resident.)
